 [The Original Unofficial NASH BRIDGES]

* "DOWNTIME"
January 30, 1998

Episode 46       Airdate: 1/30/98      Writer: Carlton Cuse and John Wirth     Director: Melanie Mayron
Guest Stars: Russell Means, Suki Kaiser, Christian J. Meoli, and Daniel Roebuck as Richard Bettina. Special Guest Star: Eileen Brennan.

Lynnette:You remember when I kissed you in this car?
Nash:What? You never kissed me in this car.
Lynnette:I did so. I was fifteen, little Catholic school girl in her blue uniform and you were my older sister's stud-ly college boyfriend and you picked me up from school one day. Come on, you don't remember that?
Nash:You're delusional - it never happened.
Lynnette:Ha ha. I see, I see. So your memory is not only photographic, but it's selective, huh?
Nash:I'm not speakin' to you anymore.
Lynnette:Ha ha.

Nash and the SIU raid Marlon Silver's restaurant, armed with a search warrant and sledgehammers. Nash and Joe begin smashing the drywall, looking for the murder weapon that Marlon used to kill his wife. Nash locates the knife, and Marlon is brought back to the station. Rick Bettina is waiting, and Rick orders Nash to take his accumulated vacation time of 10 months and 13 days. Nash is effectively off the job.

Nash goes shopping with Lynnette (ex-wife Lisa's younger sister) to stock up on food since everybody is staying at Lisa's apartment (while Nash's place is being re-floored). The supermarket is held up by five robbers. Nash kills two, while another two escape in a yellow truck. Lynnette sees another robber's face as he takes off his mask to escape on foot. Bettina shows up with Nash's replacement, a Blackfeet Indian named Dexter Birdsong. The dead robber is identified as Greg Garcia, part of a gang involved in a series of hold-ups. Bettina transforms the SIU with a new defective coffee machine and a time clock to log in and out.

Nick (Nash's dad) knows Loretta Bettina (Rick's mom). Loretta is married to Chief of Police Danny Rooney. Nash goes to see Chief Rooney, but he refuses to override Rick's interpretation of departmental regulations. Nash begins to fight back by asking Harvey for Rick's personnel file and the regulation book. Joe fights back with dirty tricks - Joe replaces Rick's shoes with identical smaller sized shoes. An informant Boz Bishop comes to see Nash, but Rick has Boz arrested instead. Boz will only talk to Nash and reveals the name of Jim Wilson, one of the robbers.

Nick challenges Loretta to a horse race with the winner taking ownership of both horses. While riding along in the 'Cuda, Lynnette spots Jim Wilson. Nash responds, but is forced to kill Wilson. The entire squad is on edge, unable to stand Rick Bettina. Joe and Harvey threaten to retire, Evan wants to transfer out. Nash sends a complaint to the Police Commission. Joe and Birdsong interrogate the owner of the Barton Armored Cars since the company is the common link in all the robberies. Birdsong gets the owner to confess to leaking information to the robbers. The Police Commission refuses to review Nash's complaint against Rick.

The next target of the robber is known - the race track where Nick and Loretta are having their private horse race. Nick's horse Mr. Woody beats Zanzibar Four. Nash intercepts the robbers by cuffing the driver and padlocking the yellow truck. Rick, with small shoes pinching his feet, shows up too late.

Nash hits Rick with his own regulations - Rick was drawing two paychecks while still on department time. A nervous Rick fires Birdsong and puts Nash back in charge. Nash orders the coffee machine taken away and sledgehammers the time clock. Rick agrees to stay in his old office at the Hall of Justice, away from the SIU. The horse Zanzibar Four dies of a heart attack minutes after Nick takes possession. Loretta will collect the horse insurance, but Nick is out of luck.
